Logan International Airport Terminal B

Simon Design Engineering performed a Chapter 34 structural building code review of the existing Terminal E annex, formerly known as Terminal D. The existing structure was analyzed and upgraded seismically to facilitate the renovation and expansion of the building which allowed Southwest Airlines to enter the Boston Logan Airport market with new gates and concessions. This 34,000 square-foot renovation project at Logan International Airport provides additional gates for future air carriers, creates new passenger hold room space, develops shell space for a future security checkpoint, and includes a new baggage claim system. A new roof structure was added and floor areas were infilled to create additional occupied space. In addition, there were various existing floor elevations within the space and at the interfaces with adjacent terminal buildings which needed to be adjusted to match.

All MEP systems were upgraded or replaced. The existing moment-frame structure was upgraded with new steel seismic bracing, requiring locations that did not interfere with circulation. New foundations were limited to one additional pile cap located outside the existing footprint, avoiding costly sitework of multiple foundations near existing underground utilities and difficult interior foundation installation.

Logan International Airport Green Bus DepotSimon Design Engineering also provided Structural Engineer of Record services on this construction manager at risk project. The Massport Green Bus Depot provides administrative and transportation office space in addition to bus storage, maintenance and servicing facilities for the fleet of buses used for operations at Logan International Airport. Located on a 9.4 acre triangular parcel of land in the North Service Area of Logan Airport, the project site is bordered by the MBTA Blue Line tracks, Boston Harbor/Wood Island Marsh, and existing buildings housing Logan flight kitchens. The facility consists of four connected buildings: administration/operations/office space; bus maintenance/wash bays; enclosed bus storage; and covered bus storage for a total of 72,000 square feet of new structure.
